2019 Gerler Shiraz Viognier
McLaren Vale, SA
The 2019 Shiraz Viognier is a powerful, full-bodied McLaren Vale red with serious structure and depth. Wild-fermented Shiraz brings dense black plum, blueberry, and cassis, while a touch of biodynamic Viognier adds lift, floral aromatics, and finesse. Grippy tannins, bold texture, and layers of spice, black pepper, and a hint of apricot make this a commanding wine built to age. Small-batch, whole bunch fermented, and unapologetically intense — this is a red to decant, savour, and respect.
The Viognier? From a certified biodynamic vineyard down the other end of McLaren Vale. Just enough added to do what it’s supposed to do: lift the aromatics, round out the palate, and give the wine some polish without softening its backbone.
This is a massive wine — dark fruit for days (think black plum, blueberry compote, cassis), layered with dried herbs, black pepper, and a flicker of apricot and jasmine from the Viognier if you pay close attention. The tannins are serious — grippy and firm, but ripe and well-integrated. It’s got the kind of structure that says “I’ll still be here in 10 years, thanks very much.”
Texturally, it’s bold, chewy, and commanding. This isn’t a gluggable Tuesday night red — this is decant it, give it some time, pour it with reverence kind of stuff.
You’ll want food with flavour and fat. No salad pairings here.
– Slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic – yes. Just yes.
– Dry-aged ribeye steak – simple, rare, well seasoned.
– Charred mushrooms with black garlic butter – if you’re going veg, go deep and umami.
– Rich game dishes – venison, wild boar, or anything from the “hunters and gatherers” section of the menu.
Let customers speak for us
from 10 reviewsI got this one cos it was a best-seller and wanted to see what the fuss was about... pleased to say it's well-deserved. Beautiful for savouring as a wind-down treat at the end of a long day, or splitting a bottle with mates over a platter of cheese and meats.
I do love a dry Rose and this one was a corker. The kind of wine you open ‘just for one glass’... and suddenly the bottle’s gone. Will be back for more.
Crisp, zesty and sooo easy to drink. It was a like a chardonnay, but different and quite fresh. Loved every sip.
Absolutely loved this Shiraz. It’s everything I want in a red - juicy fruit with a velvety finish. Great quality.
